Part of the experience that we try to provide the Marathon High School Fishing Club is the opportunity to learn from local guides. At our last meeting on February 5, our club members had the opportunity to learn from a couple of Islamorada's finest fisherman. Captains Tim Klein and Charlie Scoble took the afternoon off from fishing and made the drive down to meet with our club and show them some hot tips and tactics.
Capt. Charlie covered the tactics needed to find and locate trophy inshore fish. His presentation covered fishing the flats, channels, bridges, and other locations where the fish might be. Capt. Charlie also covered what baits usually work best for targeting specific species and the best ways to present the baits depending on conditions.
Capt. Tim gave a very detailed presentation on reef fishing, specifically how to target yellowtail and grouper. The club learned the importance of chumming for yellowtail and different ways to do it. Capt. Tim described why it was not only important to use a chum bag, but to also make your own mixture of scratch with oats, chum, and other ingredients. One of the most important lessons taught by Capt. Tim was the use of fluorocarbon leader while targeting yellowtail that have excellent eye sight.
The Marathon High School Fishing Club would like to extend a huge thank you to Capt. Tim, Capt. Charlie, IFACT, and the IFC for taking time out of their busy schedules and teaching the kids some very important tactics.
